Although many scientists consider CBD as a potential treatment for various mental health conditions, to date the research conducted still does not provide a clear understanding of the interaction of CBD with complex brain activity and its long-term effects. . CBD products can be used for a number of reasons, one of which is to increase focus and productivity. But can CBD help? Here's what you need to know about using CBD to improve focus. In this article, we'll look at major research topics, recent findings, and explanations of how CBD can positively impact our brain function.

1. The interaction of CBD with the endocannabinoid system

The endocannabinoid system, or ECS for short, is a neuromodulatory system that plays an important role in central nervous system development, synaptic plasticity, and response to endogenous disturbances and environmental influences.

The endocannabinoid system is a complex network that includes three main segments which are described below.

Cannabinoid receptors – elements responsible for translating and relaying information to cells. The main receptors are CB1R and CB2R.

Endocannabinoids – molecules that bind to and stimulate cannabinoid receptors. AEA and 2-AG are two of the major endocannabinoids.

Enzymes – elements that break down endocannabinoids after use. The main enzymes are FAAH and MAGL.

Altogether, there are a huge number of receptors that are concentrated in the brain. CBD and THC can interact with brain receptors, modulating our immune system and the body's responses to pain or inflammation.

You can find more interesting information about the endocannabinoid system and how CBD may possibly interact with it in one of our previous blog posts.

Cannabidiol or CBD is a chemical compound, one of over a hundred cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant. It stimulates the production of natural endocannabinoids in the body. In exchange, more endocannabinoids can lead to better regulation of physical and mental systems, improved performance, and better health. Various studies have shown that cannabidiol can potentially help combat stress and anxiety.

CBD can affect non-endocannabinoid receptor sites in the brain that improve mood and minimize stress. Virtually everyone knows that the less stressed and anxious a person is, the more productive they are able to be.

2. Here are some of the ways CBD can improve brain function

Many complex mechanisms in our body are involved in the functioning of the brain. To get a clearer idea of how CBD works on multiple brain activities, we've focused on some of the more important effects worthy of your attention.

2.1 Anxiolytic activity

Anxiolytic activity refers to anti-anxiety actions. Anxiety problems are among the most common mental, emotional and behavioral disorders, affecting one eighth of the world's population, and which have become a very important research topic in psychopharmacology. Here's a look at some recent research that confirms that CBD has promising potential as an anxiolytic agent. The study concludes that CBD is responsible for modulations and alterations in brain activity, which could lead to proven therapeutic effects such as reducing anxiety levels.

2.2 Link with dopamine receptors

Dopamine is a hormone that is released during moments of pleasure, such as eating delicious food or having sex. It is produced from the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine, which can be obtained through protein-rich foods. Dopamine plays many roles in the brain, primarily related to movement, motivation, and reinforcing behavior.

Cannabinoids can bind to dopamine receptors and help reduce addiction to nicotine or other drugs. However, CBD has no direct effect on dopamine levels in the body. It acts on 5-HT1A receptors found in many areas of the brain, particularly in the pleasure regions where dopamine activity occurs.

2.3 Increase glutamate and serotonin levels

Serotonin, on the other hand, is a naturally occurring chemical that acts as a neurotransmitter, transferring signals between nerve cells (called neurons) throughout the body.

According to this study, CBD can act as a “moderate affinity agonist” for the 5-HT1a receptor, meaning it increases binding to the receptor in the same way serotonin does. This mechanism makes CBD a potential therapeutic agent for conditions such as anxiety and depression, due to its effects on serotonin.

Another study found that CBD can have an antidepressant effect directly through the serotonergic system because co-administering CBD with a serotonin blocker negates the benefits of taking CBD alone.

Studies have shown that CBD can increase levels of glutamate and serotonin in the body, which helps control brain function and mood. They also play a role in learning and memory. Additionally, strengthening the homeostasis of these neurotransmitters appears to help relieve depression and may further improve brain function.

CBD can act on the serotonin 1A receptor, which offers the widest range of possibilities. This property may allow CBD to help treat issues such as depression, neuropathic pain, and anxiety.

2.4 Stimulation of neurogenesis

Neurogenesis is the process by which the brain forms new neurons. Neurons, also called nerve cells, receive sensory information and send commands to our muscles to move. They are also responsible for converting and transmitting all electrical signals between each step.

So why is neurogenesis important? Neurogenesis is believed to improve our learning and memory skills. Several factors can stimulate neurogenesis, including:

exercise ;

mental activity;

the sleep ;

meditation;

sexual activity.

According to several theories, cannabidiol may increase neurogenesis by modulating the endocannabinoid system. As the study reveals, a diet rich in CBD was found to promote the survival of newborn neurons in mice. In the study conducted on mice under chronic stress, CBD was found to increase neuronal differentiation, i.e. the process of cell development.

2.5 Reduce ADHD symptoms

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a disorder that affects people's behavior. ADHD is a brain disorder that scientists have shown results in differences in the brains of children with ADHD and some of these differences change as the child grows. ADHD is often associated with a variety of co-occurring disorders, including anxiety and depression. People with ADHD may seem restless, have difficulty concentrating, and act impulsively. Although ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders in children, it also affects about 2.5% of adults.

Here is one of the studies that highlights the promising potential of CBD to fight ADHD symptoms in adults.

So, by helping to relieve ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity and impulsiveness, CBD can improve focus and productivity.

These are just a few of the brain disorders that CBD can help with. But there are a few side effects to consider, which we will discuss in the next section.

3. A note on side effects

Several drugs are used to treat different brain disorders. Thus, it is important to mention that traditional ADHD medications are classified into two main groups: stimulants (they act quickly and are widely used) and non-stimulants (less likely to cause side effects, although they are always possible). The first group has side effects such as insomnia, headaches and weight loss. The second group, meanwhile, has the following main side effects: dizziness, nausea and weight loss.

And for CBD? According to this study, cannabidiol is well tolerable at doses up to 1500 mg per day. One study showed an increase in liver toxicity (in this study, mice were given acute doses of CBD). Additionally, like grapefruit, CBD affects enzymes that are essential for drug metabolism. For this reason, before using cannabidiol, check to see if any medications or supplements you are taking contain a “special grapefruit warning”. Another study reports that taking cannabidiol can cause dry mouth and eyes. Other possible side effects are drowsiness, gastrointestinal problems, nausea, and changes in alertness and appetite. Another point to consider is that the side effects of CBD might depend on how you consume it. For example, inhaling CBD can cause asthma or other lung diseases. You can find more information about cannabidiol and its side effects in our blog post. You can also read the possible side effects of taking CBD oil. Remember that laws regarding CBD vary from country to country. On the other hand, you can find out more about the legal framework for CBD in Europe.

We strongly recommend that you consult a doctor before taking any CBD products. Additionally, it is best to start with low doses if you are new to CBD and have never used it before.

4. To finish

The brain is one of the most important organs of the human body. And like any other part of our body, it needs to be helped, protected and strengthened. We hope this article has provided you with the information you need regarding the potential effect of CBD on brain function. Remember to consult your doctor before mixing CBD with your medications. And keep in mind that more research is needed to prove the true benefits of CBD on the body. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us.
